Lily’s Candle

She came to us, this dark skinned girl
To be our brother’s wife
And when she came into our home
She changed our way of life.

With childlike faith this lovely girl
Lights a candle every day
And on the floor, by her altar there
Our Lily kneels to pray.

She does not pray for worldly things
Just food, and home, and rest
And as her candle brightly glows
We know that we’ve been blessed.

We’ve known her such a little while
Yet much respect she earns
Because we know we’re nearer God
When Lily’s candle burns.

Lily’s Candle

The Bearer

He bears it for all
she is the bearer
He brandishes success
she burdens the blame

He walks tall
she is measured
He seeks to impress
she finds no fame

He slaves to fortune
she dreams not of wealth
He is self consumed
she consumes herself

He dines on spoiled fruit
she starves on regret
His lips he loosens
she tightens her belt

To dream He is off
her nightmare’s begun
No sleep He’s lost
she wakes the Sun

His vision is narrow
she sees the truth
He lives by the hour
she spends her youth

He gives no comfort
she’s none left to offer
He takes as he pleases
she gives to the coffer

he now finds
She is lost
he spins his lies
She carries Her cross
